My CNC machine

CNC machine August 2020. Well used since built in 2017. Some modifications but still very reliable and accurate.

I have a shop made CNC machine, I used the Kronos Robotics plan found online. The plan is very well laid out, and while there are two versions I chose to do the one that has lead screws. I didn’t trust the small belts that the other design featured as I wondered if it was stout enough to move the parts without having a large margin of error. If I should ever decide to make another machine, I might explore that option as improvements are always being made to this kind of thing.

My table size is about 38″ wide and about 42″ deep, the Z axis can clear 6″ including room for the tools in the router. I explored other machines before building one, and found price point far too high for my use and funds available at the time. As of the last maintenance of the machine, I have over 4000 hours of operation since it was put online in 2017. I didn’t have any idea I’d use it that much when I began the road to discovery of the CNC world.

I put a new spoil board on at the end of September 2020, the second one for this machine. I had used 3/4″ plywood and surfaced it flat when installed and resurfaced it two or three times before replacing it. I have some T track in the bed every 10 inches or so, and when the spoil board neared that level I knew it was time to put on new. This time I’m using a 3/4″ birch cabinet grade ply that I got from a local cabinet maker in scraps (scraps large enough to really do something with though). Each spoil board has lasted more than a year, and the last one was in sad shape when I pulled it off, but the jobs run on there were more than enough to justify the cost.
